If you missed the open enrollment period, You may qualify for a "Special Enrollment" in order to obtain health coverage. During this period you have 60 days to enroll. If any of the following may apply.

Lost Employer Coverage

Medi-cal coverage was discontinued

Became lawfully present

Turned 26 and lost previous benefits

Paid a penalty at tax time for not having coverage

medicare benefits

Medicare is health insurance for people who have turned 65 and older. You may also be eligible to receive Medicare benefits earlier if you have a disability, example End Stage Renal Disease (ESRD).

Some people who receive their social security retirement may automatically receive Medicare once they turn 65, others may have to apply in order to obtain these benefits.

TAX PENALTY

California residents must either:

Have qualifying health insurance coverage, or pay a penalty when filing a state tax return

The penalty for not having coverage the entire year will be at least $900 per adult and $450 per dependent child under 18 in the household when you file your state income tax return in the given year.

A family of four that goes uninsured for the whole year would face a penalty of at least $2,700.
